Guided tour

Every Sunday at 13 and 14:30

Our expert guides provide guided tours in Norwegian or English, as required. The factory environment and its machines are used to present the history of the Norwegian canning industry. You will hear about fishing in the fjords, and the production process for the sprats (“sardines”) from their arrival in the cannery, until they are finally packed and labelled in the cans. You will hear about the working conditions and the differences for men and women in the industry, the tasks which were high status, and those which were not. In the course of the tour you will get an understanding of why the industry grew to be so significant in Stavanger, and why the town came to be Norway’s canning capital. The museum also provides basic written information for the exhibitions in 10+ different languages. 

A guided tour (English/Norwegian) is included in the admission price.
