"Iddiser" and commercials

Just at the top of the stairs you can see a packing machine. This machine was used to pack the cans in greaseproof paper, attach a key and affix a label. The machine was made in Germany in the 1930s.

Next to the machine you can see the old toilets and the old cloakroom, and here you can dress up as a cannery worker.

On the upper floor we show some of the old can-labels from the industry, known in Stavanger dialect as “iddisar”. There are more than 40,000 different ones! We also display some of the diplomas and medals won by the industry at international Exhibitions. In the same room Norway’s oldest commercial film, «Sardine Fishing» from 1909, runs continually.

In the middle of the room, on the left-hand side, is the old foreman’s office. It was here that the workers assembled every Saturday to collect their wages from the past week. Further along you can go in to the old office, where you can find the collections of medals won at international Exhibitions by the companies Chr. Aug. Thorne Co. A/S, C. Houge Thiis and Chr. Bjelland & Co. On the wall there are portraits of a number of significant people in the canning industry.

The last room shows the interior of the Board Room of the Stavanger Preserving Co.
